Chiropractic Care and Breech Deliveries

Chiropractic Care and Breech DeliveriesOur chiropractors are trained in the Webster Technique – a special skill that involves restoring proper pelvic balance and function. This technique reduces undue stress on the pregnant woman's uterus and supporting ligaments. It also decreases the stress on baby's spine and nervous system and allows for optimal fetal positioning.

Some consider it normal for a baby to present breech until the third trimester, so a breech baby is not of much concern until a patient is 37 weeks along. Roughly 4% of all pregnancies result in a breech presentation.

In the July/August 2002 issue, the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics reported an 82% success rate of babies turning vertex when doctors of chiropractic applied the Webster Technique. The results from the study also suggest it may be beneficial to perform the Webster Technique around the 8th month of pregnancy when a woman has a breech presentation.

Currently, the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) recommends women receive routine chiropractic care throughout all stages of pregnancy to maintain pelvic balance and optimize the room a baby has for development. You can learn more about the Webster Technique on their website.
